The love of three
Love Yourself with a healthy body and mind. Love Our Environment by wearing fitness apparel with minimal environmental impact to preserve our planet. Love the people around you, but also to give back to others who were not given the same possibilities. We aim to empower young people to help them to fulfill their potential and achieve their dreams by contributing to Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) in Kenya. Through sport communities, slum cleanup and education, MYSA strives to give young people in some of the largest and poorest slums in Africa, hope and the opportunity for a better life.
Poijana use post-consumer plastic bottles to create functional fitness apparel.
It is estimated that 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in the oceans every year. That is the equivalent to over 15 grocery bags of plastic trash for every meter of coastline around the globe. It takes two plastic bottles to create 2000 meters of yarn, and it takes 12 plastic bottles to create a pair of Poijana tights. With 1000 gym-goers and yogis we can reduce the amount of plastic with 12 000 pet bottles, that would otherwise end up in landfills. Or worse, the ocean.
Plastic bottles will be collected from communities where recycling possibilities are limited, which in turn will be spun into yarn to produce our activewear collection. By engaging our customers and increase awareness for the environmental damage of post-consumer waste, we commit to the responsibility of, bit by bit, making the world a cleaner place.
A closed-loop lifecycle program for the full product range will be implemented to minimize the environmental impact even further. Old clothes can therefore be exchanged for new items at a discount, reducing the need to consume more natural resources. If used materials are not recycled, new products are made by extracting fresh, raw material from the Earth, through mining and forestry. Recycling post-consumer clothes, can then help to conserve raw materials and protect natural resources.
By implementing a recycling program for worn-out clothes initially developed from post-consumer plastic bottles, the product lifecycle loop will be closed. Our aim with this is to help protecting the environment, cleaning up communities and preserving the Earth for future generations.
5% of each item will be donated to Mathare Youth Sports Association (M.Y.S.A.), which is an organisation that strives to empower young people through sports to help them to fulfill their potential and achieve their dreams.
MYSA is based in Mathare, just outside Nairobi. Mathare is a group of some of the largest and poorest slums in Africa. More than 900 000 people call these slums their home, living in mud huts with no clean water, electricity or sanitation.
What brings MYSA together is the love of sports, particularly football. They all compete in a football league, but MYSA is much more than just football. It’s not just goals on the field that counts. The youth gets points when they participate in other activities, such as collecting litter, helping to clean up the community, joining HIV/AIDS awareness sessions and attending educational classes.
